News from Penang, Malaysia

Hello everyone,

Here we are in Penang, enjoying the crazyness and diversity of this city. Penang is a mix of Malay, indian and chinese cultures, all mixed together with giant chop sticks.
We were also able to meet Amna Maulida the day we arrived. Amna is the little girl we have been trying to help. She has leukemia and her family is struggling to pay for her medical treatment. Visiting a child section in a public malaysian hospital is quite an experience. Children with leukemia and other cancers are al together in a big room, no privacy and no separation whatsoever. I remember visiting my friend Adam in the USA when he had leukemia: here, no one asked us to wash our hands, and the open door of the room leads to the busy and noisy penang street. Nevertheless, I was able to talk to Amna's doctor, and realized how quickly we need to act. We really need to take this to a next level.
For those who are in the USA, and for our friends in France, there are in both countries people who are helping us raise money. A dollar or euro for us means nothin. Here it is a night in a hotel for Amna's dad. Please contact me if you think you can spare a little. Send me an email or leave a comment on this blog. I will keep on posting the evolution of Amna's situation. For now she is back in Banda Aceh for a week, eventhough this is really not a good idea. Her risk of getting an infection are high, but her parents clearly understand she is not to get out of the house..The next moove is to organise a trip for her three sisters to come to Penang to do the comptaibility test for Amna's transplant. We need all the help we can.
To end on a nicer note, the beaches here are beautiful. Yesterday saw abel and I lying down on white sand thinking about nothing but the sun burning our skin. Mor epictures will be posted once we get back to Aceh.
Sampai Jumpa!
Emily
